Why Fox News is a Joke
As i flipped through the channels at about 2:30 last night i came upon a show that i think may be one of the worst and most outrageous shows ever. The show i am referring to is “Red Eye” on the Fox News Channel. This show was despicable and should be taken off air immediately. Its not the fact that Fox is an extremely biased network that offers pseudojournalism. Rather it has to do with the disgraceful comments made by guests and especially its host Greg Gutfeld. Comments made by him should be banned from the airways.
Last night, they were discussing the recent controversy at Harvard University, in which the school set aside a few hours a week in order to better serve Islam women. I believe that these women have the right to work out without having to feel uncomfortable. Whether or not you agree with me, I do not think you would say the things that Mr. Gutfeld did. He said that the women of Harvard did not have the rights to do this and compared it to the idea of someone saying they did not want to workout around homosexuals and Jews. Showing that not only is he homophobic and antisemitic, but does not respect other cultures and religions.
In addition he said “what do these women have to work out for. They are always covered in those long robe things. Who cares what they look like.” How could this man be allowed to say these things on television. After watching his show, i researched him online and came across more evidence of just how dumb this man is. One of his recent “Greg-alouges” has him talking about blogging. He says that this media is stupid, in that it allows people to read all of your personal thoughts. Duhh Greg! Thats the point! Further, he suggests using a telephone to communicate. Come on Greg, join us in the 21st century. Everyone in the media knows that blogs are becoming the most important medium of communication. If you do not know this, then you should not be in the media. He signs off with the statement “if you disagree with me, than you sir, are worse than Hitler.” Are you kidding Greg? Hitler? This just further shows how antisemitic and ignorant you are.
Another comment he makes is about Ben and Jerry’s recent endorsement for Sen. Obama. Mr. Gutfeld compares their ice cream to guns and tobacco. However, it looks as if Mr. Gutfeld himself has a freezer stocked with Phish Food.
I had to stop watching his videos here, because i just had to write about it, but there were plenty more, including How Hollywood is Helping Al Qaeda, “How its easy to Stereotype Red Necks,” How charity work done for troops in Iraq is not worth it, how we should have more kids–because even though we are bound to have lots of stupid ones, we will eventually have a smart one (flawless logic Greg)–and many more videos. Each one more despicable than the next.
Though I do not think that Fox News should be allowed to have their own channel, I do not think this will happen any time soon. However, if enough people complain about this show, maybe we keep just one more person from influencing people the wrong way. Greg Gutfeld is a terrible person and something should be done to stop him. If you disagree with me, than you sir, are worse than Mr. Gutfeld.
PR vs. Advertising
In recent years, the number of advertisements that the public views each day has increased dramatically. While companies have spent more and more money on advertising campaigns, people becoming less affected by each individual message. This phenomenon is known as the “wallpaper affect.” Although, from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep, we are surrounded by thousands of advertisements, most of us cannot recall the majority of these messages. Luckily, there is an easy solution to the problem, Public Relations. PR offers a cheaper and more affective way for a company to promote its product or service. PR works differently than advertising in that it is disseminated through a third party rather than being a one-sided message. Advertising doesn’t tell the whole story, it does not present alternatives, and is often misleading. While publics cannot believe what they see in advertisements, they do believe what they hear on the news and read in newspapers, magazines, and blogs. Today, advertising is more creative than in the past and has become less productive and more of an art form. While creativity allows for an entertaining advertisement, it does not generate interest or change people’s attitudes towards a product. While many companies such as Energizer, Isuzu, General Motors, and Kmart have spent more money on advertising than any other company in their industry, they still are well behind their competitors in sales. Is this because their products are inferior? No, in fact most people do not see much or any difference between the products. However, these companies have not been able to distinguish their selves from their competitors. While these businesses have jumped around from one advertising agency to another, the solution to their problems has been right in front of them the whole time. The answer is Public Relations.
